Agroecology Scholarships
The following awards and scholarships are available to students in the Agroecology program. Scholarships with an asterisk * preceding the name of the scholarship require documented financial need. More information on this subject can be found in the guidelines for Documenting Financial Need. Students applying for these awards and scholarships are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
Procedures and deadlines are:
- At the Office of Student Aid, 314 Shields Building. By mid-February: (to document financial need). Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal Application for student aid. Also available from http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
- At the College of Agricultural Sciences Resident Education Office, 101 Agricultural Administration Building. By mid to late March: Submit a completed “College of Agricultural Sciences Scholarship Application Form” for Department and College awards and scholarships available on the college Web site.
- At the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Office, 115 Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building. By late March or early April obtain memo or other evidence supporting participation score as needed.
By April 29, 2006: (to be considered for a Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Scholarship)
Submit a completed "Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Scholarship Application Form", a copy of your most recent transcript, and a one page typed written vita describing your background, scholarly achievements, activities and work experiences, and your career aspirations and goals.

Scholarships Available for Agroecology
* Documented Financial Need Required
- Edgar and Dorothy Fehnel Scholarship in Agroecology - Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Agroecology major in the College of Agricultural Sciences who have achieved superior academic records or who manifest promise of outstanding academic success. Preference shall be given to those students who have gained business management skills through previous coursework.
- Tim and Amy Baughman Oravec Memorial Award - The purpose of this award shall be to honor and recognize an undergraduate student who is enrolled or planning to enroll in either the Animal Sciences or Agroecology majors in the College of Agricultural Sciences, and who has performed outstanding service (paid or unpaid) within the previous academic year in a crop or applied animal nutrition lab.
- * Ag Limestone—Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior enrolled in the Integrated Crop Management option of the Agroecology major who is in the upper two-fifths of the class. The student should be a leader as indicated by participation in extracurricular activities and should have documented financial need. Supported annually by the Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association.
- Alan F. Bilzi Scholarship in Environmental Science - Consideration shall be given to all full-time undergraduate students who have an academic focus in Agronomy or Soils and a primary interest in pursuing a career in environmental science and who have achieved superior academic records or show promise of outstanding academic success. Endowed by Allan F. Bilzi.
- * Buckwheat Scholarship - Applicant must have achieved academic success and demonstrated promis of professional success.
- Ethel Gerhart Memorial Scholarship in Agronomy - Consideration shall be given to all undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled or are planning to enroll in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, College of Agricultural Sciences. Endowed through the estate of Ethel Gerhart.
- * J. Richard Godshalk Scholarship Award - This award is available to all full-time undergraduate students who have at least third-semester standing and who are enrolled or planning to enroll in either the Integrated Crop Management or the Plant Science option in the Agroecosystems Sciences (Agroecology) major. The applicant must have achieved a minimum grade-point average of 3.0, demonstrated a commitment to high ethical standards in their daily lives, be a U.S. citizen, who have demonstrated sustained academic performance and have documented financial need. Supported annually by Hoffman Seeds, Inc.
- The Lawrence L. Huber Memorial Award - This grant is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled or planning to enroll in a major offered by the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences who has demonstrated exemplary academic achievement. Endowment to perpetuate the name of Dr. Lawrence L. Huber.
- * The Lawrence F. Marriott Memorial Scholarship - Consideration shall be given to all full-time undergraduate students who have at least third-semester standing and are enrolled or planning to enroll in one of the Crop and Soil Sciences majors (exclusive of all Turfgrass Management majors). These students should have achieved at least a B average in courses relating directly to their major, show a commitment to high ethical standards in their daily lives, and be U.S. citizens. Preference will be given to students studying agronomic field crops production and associated soils science studies. Preference will also be given to students who have documented financial need and sustained academic performance. Endowed in memory of Lawrence F. Marriott.
- * Willis L. McClellan Memorial Scholarship - Eligibility is open to all undergraduate or graduate students with documented financial need and are enrolled or planning to enroll in Agronomy or Agroecology majors who have an interest in either studying either insect problems or diseases in conservation tillage. Endowed in memory of Dr. Willis L. McClellan.
- * Pennsylvania Agronomic Education Society - Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all full-time undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior year who and are enrolled in any major in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences or Horticulture. Consideration shall be based on scholarship, leadership, financial need and interest in his/her major. One award will be made in Crop and Soil Sciences and the other in Horticulture. Supported annually by the Pennsylvania Agronomic Education Society,Inc.
- * Pennsylvania Forage and Grassland Council Scholarship - Consideration shall be given to full-time undergraduate students who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in the College of Agricultural Sciences majoring in Agroecology or enrolled in the Department of Dairy and Animal Science whose cumulative grade point average is not less than the all-University GPA and who have a demonstrated financial need. Preference shall be given to those students who have a background or have expressed an interest in forage based agriculture. Supported annually by the Pennsylvania Forage and Grassland Council.
- Pennsylvania Seedsmen's Association Award - Eligibility is open to all Horticulture and Agroecology junior or senior undergraduate students who have demonstrated leadership and character, and who have shown outstanding ability in agriculture particularly as it relates to the seed industry. Supported annually by the Pennsylvania Seedsmen's Association grant.
- M. Forest Randolph Memorial Scholarship
- Harold W. Swartley Scholarship in Agronomy - Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all full-time and part-time undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences who have achieved superior academic records of whom manifest promise of outstanding academic success.
College-wide scholarships are also available to qualified applicants.
